Synopsis
Bailey Jones writes romance for a living, but her own love life is still tied to the one man she never really got over. When it becomes clear that someone is watching her a little too closely, Rhett Monroe, her first love and the man who once broke her heart, comes back into her life in full protective mode.
With Bailey’s safety suddenly in question, Rhett takes her to Cedar Shores to keep her out of sight. Unfortunately for both of them, being thrown back into close quarters means all the old history, chemistry, and unfinished feelings come roaring back with it.
Main Character Info and Summary
Bailey Jones – a romance author who is smart, funny and clearly not as over Rhett as she’d probably like to be.
Rhett Monroe – Bailey’s first love, now an ex-Navy SEAL turned security specialist with a very intense protective streak.
Review
The first book in Lily Parker’s new Cedar Shores series, Safe Haven, is a small town romantic suspense that leans into some of my favourite tropes. At just over 250 pages, it’s a quick read, but there’s plenty packed into those pages.
Bailey Jones is a bestselling romance author known for writing about brooding, world‑ending heroes, yet she’s never managed to find her own happily‑ever‑after. Her first love, Rhett Monroe, was the boy who used to toss her into the lake every summer and then disappeared to become an ex‑Navy SEAL and security specialist. When an obsessed stalker starts sending Bailey personal messages, Rhett returns as her protector. He takes her to Cedar Shores, the lakeside town where they spent their childhood summers, because it’s the one place he knows he can keep her safe.
The tension between Bailey and Rhett crackles! Every argument is laced with unresolved feelings, every brush of their hands carries an electric jolt…oh to be young again! Their shared history gives the romance real weight; you can feel how much they meant to each other and why the distance between them hurts. Rhett is the protective, competent hero you expect in a romantic suspense, but he also has a vulnerable edge from his military past. Bailey is funny and self aware and her career as a writer adds a meta layer to their banter. Watching her reconcile the fictional heroes she creates with the real man in front of her is both amusing and touching.
The suspense plot is straightforward: the stalker is creepy enough to keep you on edge and there are a few red herrings to keep you guessing. It’s not the most twisty mystery I’ve read, but it serves its purpose by forcing Bailey and Rhett into close quarters and giving their interactions stakes. The small‑town setting is perfect and really adds an important dimension to the story. Cedar Shores feels like a place you’d want to visit or even somewhere you’d move your whole life to! Sun‑drenched days at the lake, a tight‑knit community and a sense that summer never really ends. The side characters, Bailey’s best friend, her family and the locals all add texture and hint at future stories in the series. If you enjoy friends‑to‑lovers, brother’s best friend or small town tropes, you’ll recognise and appreciate the groundwork Parker lays for later instalments.
Parker’s writing is accessible and infused with humour and heart. Even with the stalker storyline, the overall tone is warm and cosy. The steam level is on the spicier side, but it fits the push‑pull dynamic between Bailey and Rhett. There are a few moments however where the pacing wobbles a tad. Some readers might find the middle stretch a little labouring and the resolution of the suspense plot is a little too neat and tidy, but by no means does this impact the overall enjoyment you get from this tale. This is very much a romance first story; if you’re looking for a darker sided lake side drama, adjust your expectations accordingly!
As an opener to the Cedar Shores series, Safe Haven does its job well. It establishes the setting, introduces a cast of characters you’ll want to see again and delivers a satisfying second‑chance love story with just enough danger to keep things interesting.
Who I’d Recommend This Book To
Readers who love second-chance romance with real history and unresolved feelings.
Anyone who enjoys protective, intense love interests and that “touch her and die” kind of energy.
Readers who like romantic suspense that still feels warm, funny and very readable rather than super dark and heavy.
People who love forced proximity and small town settings
Verdict
Safe Haven really clicked for me. The writing is easy to sink into, the humour adds warmth, and Bailey and Rhett’s chemistry does exactly what it needs to. It’s romantic suspense with a cosy, addictive edge, and I had a genuinely great time with it.
