Review

The Book of Azrael is dark, intense, and very dramatic. The world building is big, the stakes are high and the emotional trauma is even higher.

At the heart of the story is Dianna’s mission to find the Book of Azrael, an ancient relic that many believe doesn’t even exist. Kaden however, is convinced it is real and sends her after it, believing the book has the power to reopen realms that were sealed long ago. That search is what really drives the plot forward, because it puts Dianna directly on a collision course with Liam, whose own history is deeply tied to the wider danger surrounding the relic.

As the hunt for the book unfolds, the story grows into something much bigger than a simple quest. What starts as a mission of obedience and survival becomes tangled up with ancient history, shifting loyalties, and the threat of war across multiple realms. It gives the book a strong plot beyond the romance and adds a real sense of momentum to everything that happens between Dianna and Liam.

The real standout for me was Dianna. She’s fierce, flawed, and genuinely interesting, which made her far more compelling than the usual fantasy heroine we are used to seeing. I also really liked Liam, who could have easily been just another broody love interest, but to my surprise, he actually had real depth and weight to him.

The chemistry between them is one of the strongest parts of the book. It has proper enemies to lovers tension with anger, mistrust and and the best banter i’ve seen between two love interests for a while.

This is definitely a book you need to pay attention to because there is a lot going on, but once settled into it, you’ll be completely hooked. Dark fantasy, strong tension, powerful characters, and plenty of drama. Basically, my kinda of book!

Dramatised Audiobook Review

The dramatised audiobook works really well for a story like this because everything about this book is big! Big emotions, big stakes, big personalities.

The full cast style makes the world feel more immersive and gives the story a cinematic edge, which suits the tone perfectly. It adds extra intensity to the emotional moments and makes the whole experience feel even more dramatic.

The voice actors were all well suited to their roles which really brought through the intensity that this book delivers. My only critique, would be the music, which for me was quite cheesy at times. Honestly, could have done without it. However the narration & writing more than make up for what I see as a little misstep, in an otherwise perfect adaptation.

Quick side note. If you are interested in the audiobook, the dramatised version is in two parts. So it is more of an investment however, in humble opinion, one worth making if you are able.

Verdict

If you are even remotely interested in Dark Fantasy Romance then this book is for you! Hands down, this is is an incredibly well written, witty and clever tale that will keep you hooked from start to finish. You’ll be running to your local book store or clicking away to order the second book and audiobooks as soon as you read or listen to the last word. Trust me!
